Mnet responds to FTC’s demands to change trainee contracts for “Produce 101”
Mnet has given their official response regarding the Fair Trade Commission‘s demands that it changes its contracts for Produce 101 trainees.
On April 26th, Mnet officials stated that they have already begun altering the Produce 101 contracts and will be notifying the FTC of its changes. They add, “For future programs produced by Mnet and CJ E&M, the contract following the guidelines of the FTC will be used.”
Before getting to Produce 101, the FTC has also requested contract changes due to their unfair terms and conditions for programs such as We Kid (Mnet) and K-Pop Star 5 (SBS).
It was previously reported that the FTC had approached CJ E&M (parent company of Mnet) about its contract for Produce 101 trainees, demanding they amend 12 unfair terms and conditions.
In one of the clause in the original contract, the agency nor its trainee(s) cannot take legal action against the show should it result in any kind of negative reaction from the audience. This clause in particular protects Mnet who is well-known among viewers for their “malicious editing” in which certain contestants are edited in a bad light in order to create drama.
Another clause in the contract also deemed any remastering of existing songs or newly created choreography to be CJ E&M‘s (Mnet’s parent company) lawful properly with no compensation to the original creators.
