BLACKPINK’s Jennie Gets Honest About People’s Misconceptions Of Her Personality

It’s something Jennie’s faced since she was young!

Ever since BLACKPINK debuted back in 2016, the members have been in the public eye. They’ve been praised whenever they succeed and subjected to criticism over the smallest things. The way you dress, act, or present yourself is under scrutiny by both netizens and the media.

One person who has had more than her share of both is BLACKPINK’s Jennie.

In particular, over the years, Jennie has earned the title “Ice Princess.” Although many BLINKs use it to praise the idol’s elegant and sharp features, others have used it negatively to try and portray Jennie’s personality as cold and rude.

Along with the rest of BLACKPINK, Jennie recently appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. In her own editorial, Jennie shined in the images but also got real about everything from the hardships of being an idol to people’s perceptions of her.

During the interview, Rolling Stone asked Jennie if any misperceptions were made about her, especially considering she is such a huge figure. It seems as if they have changed over the years but has still meant that Jennie has come under scrutiny.

When I was a kid, people often said I was too timid. I wasn’t bright and bubbling with energy; I was shy, even about saying hello.

Yet, as she’s gotten older, Jennie revealed that she had to break out of that because it led to her being criticized, mainly if she was seen as not saying hello. Even if it was due to her shyness, many believed it was rude.

Nowadays, I realize I have to [say hello], otherwise it’s gonna come off wrong, so I’ve broken out of that shell.

Even as Jennie started to become an idol, she was constantly met with comments about how she looked. People would often say that Jennie looked “pissed off” when she was simply standing still and existing. Unsurprisingly, it hurt her feelings at first, but Jennie learned to take it with a pinch of salt over the years.

When I was a trainee, I often heard, ‘Why does Jennie always look pissed?’ At the time, that hurt my feelings. I’m not pissed. I’m just shy in front of other people. Rather than being hurt, I accept it and try harder next time.

Whereas some media and haters still like to label Jennie with those terms, BLINKs know differently, understanding that although the idol is shy, she is also a ray of sunshine. Whether she is on stage or hanging out with friends, Jennie can put a smile on everyone’s face.
