Netizens Praise HYBE’s Girl Group NewJeans For Diverse Representation In Each Member’s “Hype Boy” MV
Netizens can’t stop praising HYBE‘s new girl group NewJeans!
The five-member girl group is produced by Min Hee Jin, the CEO of ADOR Entertainment and the former creative director of SM Entertainment, where she was the driving force behind some of f(x), EXO, and Red Velvet‘s most iconic concepts. The group consists of Hanni, Minji, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein.
Since their song “Attention” was released on July 21, you can’t scroll long on Twitter, TikTok, or Instagram without someone hyping it up!

Yet, it’s not just the song that pre-debut fans are loving. It’s the diversity and representation!
From the start of “Attention,” we are met with a diverse crowd outside a theater. It’s the same inside the theater as well during the concert.
Later in the MV, Danielle’s members “crash” her video call as she talks to some friends. Again, the group is diverse.
Their follow-up single, though, proved even more impressive in terms of inclusivity and representation as it includes people of different ethnicities and orientations.
The next day, “Hype Boy” was released, and it served as a way to get to know each member better as there are multiple music videos. At the end of the Official MV Intro, you are given four MV options to choose from. Each one contains a different POV of the storyline.
And though the title of the song and its lyrics are gender specific, the music videos actually give LGBTQIA+ representation.
In Danielle and Haerin’s, the two friends resolve their differences and choose each other after a boy plays the both of them.
Minji falls for a cute guy at an amusement park who is Black.
Hyein crushes on an artsy asthmatic boy who appears to be Spanish (the MV was filmed in Spain) and lost his inhaler.
Some also interpret the ending as her finding out that he is gay. Others interpret it differently, though.

Throughout Hanni’s MV, she is interested in a mysterious dancer who keeps their identity hidden with a hoodie and face mask.
When they finally meet at the party, the dancer is revealed not to be a traditional boy. Instead, the person may actually be gender fluid, non-binary, or Transgender, and Hanni does not appear upset and still shows interest.
So, each love interest in their music videos was of a minority group! Netizens are reacting very positively so far…
