Fans are well aware of the idol’s long-time love of the game, which has affected his eating habits, influenced his decor, and even started a trend in Korea.
Jin has worked with MapleStory twice before, once in collaboration with all of BTS and once when he served as a judge for the game’s first character design awards, Golden Hand Awards.
Given the idol’s immense love of the game, fans knew that watching Jin interview for his job at Nexon would be funny. And while the idol was certainly his usual charming and humorous self, he also was very genuine about why he loves this particular game so much.
Interviewer: Why did you aply for Nexon’s MapleStory?
Jin: MapleStory was my life when I was young.
Jin explains that although he can rely on ARMY when he’s having a difficult time…
Jin: When I’m having a hard time, I think of my fans first.
He also focuses on being able to play MapleStory as a break after his work is finished. Since MapleStory provides such solace to the idol, Jin wants to work for Nexon to help continue to improve the game and create a haven for all the players.
Jin: The second thing that came to mind was MapleStory. I can’t wait to go home and play this game. Because I wanted to be healed by this, I applied for MapleStory because I wanted to give the same feeling to others.
The interviewer, of course, asked Jin why he would want to work on a game when he has so many impressive qualifications. Still, Jin simply continued to explain that since MapleStory has been so important in his life, he wants to help it be a good experience for others.
Interviewer: Looking at your resume, your experience and awards, the specs are really strong. I’m curious why this person wants to plan a game with such good specs.
Jin: Continuing from before, MapleStory was my doctor, my cure, my resting place, my sanctuary. So I wanted to be of some help to that.
Interviewer: From the perspective of making this game, I almost cried a little because it was such an appreciative answer.
Jin: I applied because you made it all.
When the interviewer asks Jin for his “happiest time playing [the] game,” Jin talks about working with someone in his guild to defeat a new boss.
Interviewer: It was touching to hear that MapleStory was the cure. Then I’d like to hear something more enjoyable, when was your happiest time playing this game?
Jin: The happiest time was when the new boss came out, I challenged with a guild member for a long time. We tried for a month or two, and we communicated with each other that this would be good. As you can see from my resume, I’m not in the field of briefing or researching something. But it was so much fun to do.
Because of his work as an idol and his introverted tendencies, Jin admits that he doesn’t have a lot of friends. But by playing an online game like MapleStory, he can interact with users and go on in-game adventures with them, allowing him to be social in a comfortable way.
Jin: I don’t have many friends, it’s not an environment where I can make friends. These days, it’s called MBTI. E is extroverted and I is introverted. I have a very high rate of I. Actually, I didn’t go out very often. But players in the game have fun with me and communicate a lot. I felt like I had a lot of friends.
Many gamers can relate to Jin’s love of MapleStory as games are often an excellent way to foster a sense of community and an enjoyable escape to look forward to at the end of a long day.
