K-Pop Fans Have High Hopes For U.S. President Biden’s Crackdown On “Scam” Concert Ticket Fees
In a recent press conference, U.S. President Joe Biden announced that he would be taking steps to crack down on a variety of different “scam” fees including those placed on concert tickets.
As many K-Pop fans have experienced being able to see your favorite group in concert is one of the best parts of being a fan. Since travel restrictions have been lifted in many places, K-Pop groups have been touring more often than ever before!
Before you can attend a concert, however, you have to purchase tickets and for many fans, that has become a huge problem for a variety of reasons, with massive fees being attached to the ticket price causing a huge issue for fans hoping to attend shows.
Normally, when a group announces a show, they will share pricing tiers for their tickets so that fans have a good idea of what the cost of the show will be.
Unfortunately, when it is time for ticket sales, fans often discover that the online platforms selling the tickets have added a variety of fees to the cost of the ticket, often bringing it to a much higher amount. This has become the standard across all music shows, including K-Pop concerts.
Fortunately, it seems measures will soon be taken to prevent massive, unannounced fees from being added to concert tickets.
On October 26, while speaking at the White House, President Biden announced several new initiatives to target what he called “junk fees,” on items like plane tickets and concert tickets.
There are tens of billions of dollars in other junk fees across the economy, and I’ve directed my administration to reduce or eliminate them. Last week, the Federal Trade Commision started at work on a rule to crack down on unfair and deceptive fees across all industries. Fees that were never disclosed, and [those where] there was no way to avoid the fee like processing fees for concert tickets.
— President Biden
Ticketmaster’s scam fees now cost as much as 78% of a ticket. The company controls the events, the venues, even the artists and it’s destroying live music.
