Seungri was charged with a total of nine different offenses due to his involvement in the Burning Sun scandal, but was able to reduce his prison time from three years to 18 months, half of his original sentence.

Seungri was originally indicted back in January 2020, and the charges included prostitution, prostitution mediation, embezzlement, violating food safety laws, habitual gambling, and violating the foreign exchange law.

In January, it was revealed that he had already served some of his 1.5-year sentence before his temporary military enlistment. He was due to be released on February 11, 2023.

On February 9, news outlets reported that Seungri had been officially released from prison. In a statement said by an official of the Ministry of Justice, it read, “Former BIGBANG member Seungri was released from Yeoju Correctional Institution this morning.”

It seems like the media was misinformed about the release date, which might have been done purposefully to avoid huge crowds and attention. When it was announced that Seungri would be released earlier, it received a lot of negative attention from netizens.
