K-Drama fashion is a huge thing for those that watch various series. While many day-to-day looks are inspired by different series, sometimes what is worn in dramas can cause controversies.

When actress Cha Joo Young admitted she did not initially want to wear the iconic white dress because she believed it might be too revealing on camera, netizens were upset with the drama’s director.

2. Ms. Hammurabi

While actress Go Ara wearing the niqab was not controversial because of the clothing, many felt uncomfortable knowing the context. In the scene, Go Ara’s character is told that her skirt is too revealing, leading her to wear the clothing for a punchline. Another actor in the scene even shows fright when seeing her in the niqab.

3. Backstreet Rookie

Many viewers considered Eum Moon Suk‘s character “Jamaican-inspired” look cultural appropriation, especially after a scene with a black person later in the drama that many felt was over-the-top and offensive.

4. Man Who Dies To Live 

Man Who Dies To Live is set in a fictional place that appears to be modeled after middle eastern countries. The drama drew much criticism from viewers after scenes where women wore hijabs and bikinis.

5. Penthouse 3

The introduction of Penthouse 3 character Alex Lee was immediately met with offense due to his look and mannerism. Park Eun Seok, who played the character, was given dreads and took on an accent that took notes from AAVE (African American Vernacular English). The actor apologized not long after for the depiction.
