“My Fans Are Spanish Women” — The Responses Contestants From Netflix’s “The Devil’s Plan” Received After Being On The Show
Netflix‘s new reality game show The Devil’s Plan was released at the end of last month, and its popularity is growing day by day.
On September 26, The Devil’s Plan premiered its first four episodes. The next five were released a week later, and the final three episodes were released on October 10.
The Devil’s Plan is a competition of intelligence with twelve celebrity and non-celebrity contestants strategizing and creating allies to be the ultimate winner of the money prize. Upon their arrival, each contestant is given a “piece” that is used as currency in the game. “Pieces” are given to winners of games and taken away from losers. Whoever ran out of “pieces” were eliminated.
The twelve contestants were actors Han Seok Jin and Lee Si Won, YouTubers Kwak Joon Bin and ORBIT, E-Sports player Guillaume Patry, comedian Park Kyung Lim, US-based lawyer Seo Dong Joo, American orthopedic surgeon Seo Yoo Min, SEVENTEEN member Boo Seung Kwan, announcer Lee Hye Sung, professional Go player Choi Yeon Woo, and college student and pro poker player Kim Dong Jae.
The show gained popularity in not only Korea but globally, ranking first in Korean rankings and third in the global rankings. The success of the show was evident based on the variety of audience responses. In a behind-the-scenes interview about episodes ten through 12 on TEO’s YouTube channel, Seo Dong Joo, Lee Si Won, Park Kyung Lim, ORBIT, Ha Seok Jin, and Kwak Joon Bin sat with the producer of the show, Jung Jong Yeon, to talk about the show.
They discussed what the response was like from the public. When asked what people were saying to them, ORBIT stated that scientists loved his appearance on the show because he represented scientists and shared science with everyone on the show.
The scientists love it. They’re like, ‘You went and brought the scientists’ ideals to life.’
— ORBIT
Actor Han Seok Jin said that he searched for audience reactions online and discovered many people arguing which made him sad. The other contestants mentioned how everybody was talking about how handsome he is.
When I looked it up, people were arguing too much online, and seeing them continue to do that made me quite sad.
— Han Seok Jin
Actress Lee Si Won shared that she noticed how popular the show is based on the amount of calls she got. It was to the point that she truly felt like a celebrity for the first time despite having debuted as an actress in 2012.
I can feel that it is popular, since I’ve been getting a lot of messages and calls. There were a lot of comments saying, ‘This is intense,’ ‘This is firing up,’ and ‘That’s ruthless,’ and all the attention makes me think that I’m just starting out as a celebrity.
— Lee Si Won
Seo Dong Joo shared two realizations after The Devil’s Plan aired. First, she had many Spanish fans, and second, she had many female fans.
I noticed two things. First, my fans are Spanish women. It’s because I got so much hate in Spanish, so I learned a lot of Spanish cuss words. And second, I’ve gotten a lot of female fans. I’ve gotten a lot of, ‘Unnie, I like how you didn’t cry much.’ But that worried me because I thought, ‘I’m going to be crying later.’
— Seo Dong Joo
YouTuber Kwak Joon Bin, also known as Kwaktube, jokingly said that he got hate in twelve languages and that a lot of them had the word “fat” in them.
I didn’t get any new fans. First, I got hate in 12 languages. Using a translate, I found I got hate in Bahasa Indonesia, Spanish, Portuguese, and more, and most of the comments had the word ‘fat’ in them. There were a lot of comments saying ‘stupid fat, so I was like, ‘I need to lose weight.’ So after The Devil’s Plan, I often thought about going on a diet.
— Kwak Joon Bin
Lastly, announcer and TV personality Park Kyung Lim shared the response she got after the show. She claimed it was a bit different than the others.
I haven’t gotten a lot of responses. What’s going on?
— Park Kyung Lim
The other contestants shared that everyone around them loved Park Kyung Lim, but the announcer claimed she never heard them, saying, “Those people must not use the Internet.”
Producer Jung Jong Yeon said he saw comments saying, “I’ve gained the wisdom of life through Park Kyung Lim,” and “Live life like Park Kyung Lim.” The others chimed in saying that they saw comments about her, such as “I must treat people like she does,” and “She’s so wholesome.”
Park Kyung Lim joked that she never heard or saw comments like that and that she only heard comments about how she’s “Dong Joo’s mom.” She clarified that she’s only four years older than the US-based lawyer, Seo Dong Joo.
In The Devil’s Plan, the contestants naturally formed allies and their true personalities came out under the pressure of the game. Some contestants received more love while others received hate because of their actions during the show. The contestants reminded audiences that it was just a game and to not take it so seriously.
