A British tourist was caught faking his own crime.

Last month, a man identified as Ian Robbie Day from Portsmouth, England, was reported to have connived with his friends to fake his own kidnapping. His goal was to prolong his holiday in Pattaya, Thailand—which is notorious for its sex industry—after his parents cut him off financially.

When his family wouldn’t support him anymore, he staged the kidnap, that was the reason he did that. He asked his family to send money and they said no.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Sorasak Saengcha was part of the special operations team tasked to locate him after his parents contacted authorities in worry. Instead of seeing him tied up as expected, Ian was found partying without a care in the world.

He confessed to his crime, saying that he had asked three of his friends to “act like they were kidnappers holding him hostage.”

The guy chatted in iMessage and FaceTime with his relatives in the UK. He sent pictures of himself being attacked, and then after with injuries, he took pictures of himself looking like he had been beaten up. His friends would punch him and give him bruises on his face, then he would video call his family on FaceTime.

He asked his three friends to act like they were kidnappers holding him hostage. He made them wear masks in the videos and act like gangsters.

He was also found in possession of category one drugs and unauthorized firearms and ammunition.

Unsurprisingly, Ian and four others were arrested on January 26 due to these reasons as well as overstaying their tourist visas in Thailand.
