The “JaeFriends” Guest Who Prompted Kim Jaejoong To “Break” The Rules
Second-generation K-Pop idol Kim Jaejoong released his first talk show, JaeFriends, in July 2023, and there have already been 31 episodes of the popular show.
Through the show, he’s hosted multiple fellow K-Pop idols, actors, and entertainers, such as Girls’ Generation‘s Sooyoung, TEEN TOP‘s Niel, INFINITE‘s Sungjong, CNBLUE‘s Jung Yonghwa, SISTAR‘s Bora and Hyolyn, KISS OF LIFE‘s Natty and Belle, and more.
The show follows a similar format in each episode, as Jaejoong cooks for his guests and insists they use banmal, or informal speech, regardless of his senior status among the majority of his show’s guests (though not all).
Most guests have hesitated before speaking with Jaejoong informally, though the second-generation star encouraged them to become more comfortable by using informal speech with him.
A unique aspect of the show is that Jaejoong is kept in the dark about who the guest is for each episode. Instead, he is left to guess who they will be based on a series of clues presented to him.
In the latest episode, the script was flipped as host Jaejoong was the one who was uncomfortable with using banmal with his guest.
In his 31st episode, Jaejoong was joined by veteran Korean singer Yoon Dohyun, a member of the veteran rock band YB.
Jaejoong shared with Yoon Dohyun that the concept of the show was to use banmal, but he appeared nervous when presenting the idea to his guest.
Jaejoong hilariously admitted he wouldn’t be able to follow through with it because it was “too uncomfortable,” even though Yoon Dohyun was assuring him he was fine with Jaejoong speaking informally.
Yoon Dohyun later teased Jaejoong and encouraged him to use banmal, to which he eventually agreed but assured the veteran rockstar that he wouldn’t push the limits on the informalities.
The use of banmal on JaeFriends has been a hot topic on the show before and led to a discussion on the true nature of Korean hip-hop artists.
