Spoiler Alert
Netflix‘s latest true crime documentary film investigates an unusual homicide case that stunned authorities in 2010. At the center of this case is Jennifer Pan, the victim-turned-perpetrator, who orchestrated a kill-for-hire plot.
On November 8, 2010, Jennifer called 911 in distress, claiming that three money-motivated men had broken into her family home, tied her up, and shot her parents before fleeing the scene. Her mother, Bich Ha Pan, died, but her father, Huei Hann Pan, survived severe gunshot injuries. His account of what happened that night, as well as police interrogations, unmasked Jennifer as the mastermind behind the crime.
In 2015, Jennifer and her co-conspirators were sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years for the first-degree murder of Bich Ha Pan and the attempted murder of Huei Hann Pan. Where is Jennifer now, nearly ten years later?
She is currently incarcerated at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ontario. In May of 2023, Jennifer and her three surviving co-conspirators (Eric Shawn Carty died in his cell in 2018) were granted an appeal for their first-degree murder charges. The Court of Appeal for Ontario found an error in the original trial: the jury was not given the option of a second-degree murder charge for Jennifer’s mother. The results of a new trial, which has yet to begin, could affect Jennifer’s sentence for her mother’s murder but not her father’s attempted murder.
