Girls’ Generation’s Tiffany Admits To “Judging” New Generation Idols Over Music Show Performances
Girls’ Generation member Tiffany has drawn significant attention after confessing on national TV that she found herself “judging” new generation idols during music show performances.
On May 16, KST, the singer appeared as a special guest on Radio Star, talking about her experience promoting with the Girls’ Generation members again for their 15th anniversary. The hosts teased her, saying she must have become the most “Boomer” senior in the industry, to which she responded that she was indeed shocked by how “chill” the standards were on music shows these days.
[Back in the day], we tried our absolute best [to stand out] even when we weren’t in the spotlight because we wanted the attention. [But now], there is something called a ‘fan cam.’ It was the first time I had ever heard about this concept. With all the individual cameras focusing on every single member, I realized it’s just not that competitive anymore—like, idols don’t need to overdo anything now, they can take it easy. But I first experienced it during rehearsals, I was like, ‘Oh… Rehearsals are way more chill these days, huh?’ And… Yeah. I was judging the other idols like, ‘Why aren’t they breaking their backs for this?!’

The hosts continued with the jester, cooking up scenarios about how Tiffany must have prodded her juniors after witnessing the new style of performances. The idol joined them, too, in good humor.
Yoo Se Yoon: Oh. So that’s when you holler at them, right? Like, ‘Let me talk to you all for a second. Is this how easy you have it these days?’
Jang Do Yeon: Yeah, pick on them like, ‘I’m just asking because I’m genuinely curious.’ Right?
Yoo Se Yoon: ‘How long has this been going on, hmm?’
Tiffany: Unless this is just the sound check, amirite?
But she explained that even during sound checks, her generation of idols would still work hard to make sure everything was perfect to the tee, which is why the current scenario left her so astonished that others had to step in and reassure her.
Even during sound checks, though, we used to check how to work the mics and stuff… You know? Yeah, I was… That’s how I reacted. But soon, I was told by everyone that rehearsals aren’t that intense anymore these days. It was all so new to me.

Despite her unfamiliarity with the new generation of music show performances, Tiffany still denied that she was anything like a Boomer. Yet, she didn’t reserve her judgment as a veteran, saying that she still believes that idols should give their best even at rehearsals.
Yeah, I’m just saying. They say, ‘First time, last time, every time.’ So… Every single time, you gotta give it your best like it’s your very first time and it’s the very last time. Rehearsal or not.

This conversation has become a hot topic online, with some feeling that she was “shading” her junior idols, while others felt that it was a valid insight into the industry’s current state from a qualified artist.
