Netizens Are Angry At Teen Vogue’s “Disrespect” Towards IVE’s Gaeul In New Video
Netizens are furious after Teen Vogue‘s new video was deemed disrespectful towards IVE‘s Gaeul because of a lack of research.
On May 20 (local time), a new video was released with IVE called “Compliment Battle,” where the members had to read out compliments from social media to each other and try not to laugh.
At one point, Wonyoung was reading out a compliment to Gaeul that seemed to praise her for rapping.
Gaeul managed to keep her cool.
Netizens noticed something wrong with the tweet. When zooming in, they saw that the date was actually from July 2020, which seemed off because IVE didn’t debut until the end of 2021. Through research, netizens found the original tweet that was used in the video.
While it did mention Gaeul, the tweet from 2020 actually referred to Gauel from the girl group FAVORITE.
When a netizen noticed what happened, they rightly shared their thoughts, even adding that while it might be funny another group was mentioned, it could be xenophobic as the editors just searched the name and assumed it was right after seeing another Korean idol.
some of yall celebrating your fav being mentioned when this might be just straight xenophobia from us media again pic.twitter.com/ElJM3oEXg9

Netizens also agreed it was wrong.
In replies, they pointed out that not only was it the second time a lack of research had impacted IVE (it happened with Liz and WIRED) but that the group hadn’t even debuted at the time the tweet was posted, with many sharing that Wonyoung and Yujin were still in IZ*ONE. Others shared their anger at the staff of the publication and Starship Entertainment, as netizens assumed they would have checked the content before it was posted.
this tweet is from 2020 when ive hasn't even debuted yet 😭 https://t.co/s9TidHHNwS

Teen vogue is definitely wrong for that no doubt but i also want to ask if SSE even knows about this? Don’t agencies usually proof check/proof watch vids of their artists’ contents and give their approval before posting it? https://t.co/WMzL4s4Liy

from using liz’s birth name instead of her most active stage name (legit ruining her experience) in the wired video, to now this… like ? the sheer lack of SENSE in these english speaking contents pic.twitter.com/aQFDTgDXPq https://t.co/eIAvRIuZp4

While Gaeul might not be a common name for idols, the staff should’ve checked when using tweets, especially as the post used came from a time when IVE hadn’t even debuted.
