Grenade Explosion In South Korean Army Causes 2 Casualties
According to reports on May 21, KST, a hand grenade explosion led to two casualties during a training session at an Army boot camp in the administrative city of Sejong.
Military authorities have stated that the grenade exploded during a grenade throwing training held at the Army’s 32nd Division recruit training center in Sejong at around 9:50 am on May 21. The explosion caused one recruit to suffer from a cardiac arrest. He was taken to a military hospital in Daejeon, but he unfortunately passed away.
It was also reported that a non-commissioned officer was severely wounded and transported to another military hospital.
This unfortunate incident is reportedly the seventh time that a hand grenade explosion during military training has caused casualties, starting from 1994. The exact cause of this particulate explosion is yet to be discovered, but according to a military official, it is suspected that the trainee removed the safety pin from the grenade and caused an explosion unexpectedly.
The Army has pledged to cooperate with police in investigating the incident and expressed condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased recruit.
