The ongoing feud between HYBE and ADOR CEO Min Hee Jin muddied the dynamic between HYBE’s two most successful girl groups, LE SSERAFIM, and NewJeans, to a great degree after Min claimed that HYBE had shown the former preferential treatment.
Since then, netizens have been pitting the two groups against one another, often with the aim of judging which one of them is better as an idol group or who was treated better than the other. After LE SSERAFIM’s Coachella performance, many comparisons were drawn between their stage and NewJeans’ Lollapalooza performance. Now, netizens seem to be busy comparing their dancing skills.
Recently, a post went viral on Nate Pann in which the OP (original poster) had posted two short GIFs of the two groups’ members executing the same choreographies side by side. In the first clip, NewJeans’ Danielle and Haerin can be seen doing the “Like Crazy” dance challenge with BTS’s Jimin in an elevator, while in the second one, LE SSERAFIM’s Sakura and Kazuha were doing the same dance challenge with Jimin in the HYBE gym.
Based on these few seconds, the OP and the top comments concluded that the LE SSERAFIM members were very lacking in their dance technicalities compared to the NewJeans members. Many also pointed out that Danielle is not a dance-line member of her group and yet seemed to have exceptional control over the steps.
- “As far as I know, Danielle isn’t even a dance member, LOL. Now we can’t even call [LE SSERAFIM] dancers… So what are they really?”
- “Sakura really couldn’t even get the moves right for such a short dance, LOL. She can’t sing, she can’t dance. How is she a singer? LOL. Seriously, she is fit for a Japanese idol and that’s it…”
- “The difference is huge, LOL. The gap is really there.”
- “When I first saw NewJeans, I thought Danielle was the best dancer. But you’re telling me she’s not a dance member?? How well do the other NewJeans members dance… What on earth?”
- “They look like a neighborhood dance team.”
Despite the criticism, it cannot be denied that the comparison made with respect to such brief clips is far from fair. At the end of the day, both groups have unique appeals that cannot always be put into boxes. Additionally, though the feud between the executives of their labels has already unjustly affected both groups, they have still maintained a cordial relationship with each other.
