During the episode, when Hyeri asked the idol to choose between two of the latest aespa releases, “Supernova” and “Armageddon,” Karina chose the latter without any hesitation.

The singer called the success of “Supernova” “unexpected,” implying that she didn’t understand why the song had received such an explosive response.

“Supernova” was released on May 13, 2024, and went on to top multiple charts both domestically and internationally. The song made history on Melon, hitting over 76,000 unique listeners within just an hour of its release. It also achieved 463,126 daily listeners, becoming only the second track in 2024 to do so. The song has also achieved over 100 Perfect All Kills and ranked at #44 on Spotify’s Global Daily Chart.

However, according to Karina, all the members were unconvinced of the song’s potential when they heard it for the first time. They found it too complex, and Karina went on to describe it as the “classic SM vibe”— songs that are “weird” on the first listen but then become addictive.

Hyeri summed it up aptly, saying that it was a song that was only possible for aespa to pull off. The song’s new-age vibe was probably the reason for its popular appeal.
