This led to more comments from people misspelling Ningning’s name, an issue that has followed the idol throughout her career. Ningning eventually left another comment, seemingly showing her distaste for these comments.

Fans took offense to these comments because terms like “Lingling” or “Ringring” are often treated as coded slur words against East Asians in general. Additionally, Ningning previously spoke about being sensitive to misspellings or mispronunciations of her name.

Now, the person behind the initial comment has resurfaced, sharing their conversation with the idol.

On June 8, aespa held video call events for the release of their latest album, Armageddon.

In a clip shared on X, a revealed that they were behind the initial comment, and shared their conversation with Ningning.

After telling Ningning they made the comment, the idol responded with surprise, saying that it was “a joke.

That was a joke, ah yeah, that’s a joke. I think you guys are so cute because—every time you said Ningning or ningning or something like that, it’s very cute.

The fan continued by apologizing for leaving the comment, which Ningning told them not to be, saying “Don’t be. It’s very cute.”
