Eom In Sook, an infamous serial killer who left South Korea shaken in 2005 when her crimes were revealed to the world, has finally had her face exposed to the public.
Eom, a former insurance planner, came to be known as the “Insurance Serial Killer” for murdering and causing irreparable bodily harm to her family members and acquaintances to collect insurance money. Between 2000-20005, the reported number of victims was 10, five of whom lost their lives while the rest lost their eyesight due to Eom’s attack.
Though Eom In Sook’s crimes and her name were well-known to the Korean public, authorities never disclosed her face to the public. But recently, a U+ Mobile TV channel program, She Killed, revealed her picture to the public for the first time in an episode recalling her heinous crimes.
Eom’s brother also appeared in the episode and testified about the prolonged torture he and his family endured at the hands of his psychopathic sister.
In 2000, Eom fed antidepressants to her husband and pushed him down, leading to a concussion, twice, and received the first insurance payment of ₩340,000 KRW (about $247 USD). The same year, she stabbed his right eye with a clothespin, causing corneal damage. She used the same technique to tranquilize him and poured hot oil on his face a few months later. This incident was followed by her stabbing him in the stomach another few months later.
Her assault on her husband continued till 2002, and she kept disguising it as self-harm. It is estimated that she collected a total of ₩280 million KRW (about $204,000 USD) in insurance money from his injuries.
In 2002, she married another man and continued to torture him the same way. The second husband died in the hospital in 2003, and Eom collected ₩38.8 million KRW (about $28,200 USD) in insurance money.
Eom continued her crimes, with her mother and brother being her next victims. After blinding them both, she tried to kill them, along with her younger brother, by burning them alive. Both brothers sustained burn injuries while Eom In Suk took home another ₩204 million KRW (about $148,000 USD) in insurance money. Eom also set a rented apartment ablaze, killed her landlord, and injured his family in 2005.
When she went to visit his family in the hospital, she tried to set the wife on fire again. But her attempt failed, and she was caught on security cameras. The police finally arrested her, and her brother testified that anybody close to her always ends up dead or seriously injured.
Eom was investigated without detention, and she continued to commit multiple crimes, including administering drugs to random patients, injuring them, and stealing from them. The police arrested her again in April 2005. The court eventually sentenced her to life in prison. At that time, she tried to reduce her sentence by stating that she committed the crimes due to her addiction problems. But a drug test revealed her lies to the court.
Meanwhile, She Killed is a crime series based on five rare female murderers in Korea. Since May 6, it has been pre-released every Monday and Tuesday on U+ Mobile TV, while the broadcast version is released every Sunday on MBC.
