Singer Criticized For Her Blatantly “Unprofessional” Performance
A seasoned singer has received criticism for her so-called “unprofessional” antics at an awards show.

On June 23, Hong Kong Cantopop singer Joey Wong Ho Yee (also known as JW) took home the award for “Outstanding Pop Singer” at the 45th Top Ten Chinese Gold Songs Awards. She also performed her song, “13岁的天堂’” loosely translated as “Paradise at 13” during the ceremony. This performance, however, landed her in hot water.
According to Singaporean online magazine 8days, after JW was spotted reading the lyrics for “13岁的天堂’” off her palm multiple times during the performance, she made headlines and received criticism from netizens, such as:
- “Reading lyrics during a performance brings down the quality of the show. If you are not prepared, one can opt out [of the performance].”
- “JW used to be fine, but this is completely unprofessional.”
How did JW respond? She addressed the criticism head-on with an Instagram story that explained the reason for her cheat sheet.
A few days after the awards show, JW also posted a video of herself singing and addressed the criticism again, this time in the post’s caption. JW stated that her “goldfish brain” struggled to remember the lyrics of her own song because that’s just one of many things she has had to memorize recently.

After 15 Broadway shows and the accompanying concerts, I just managed to rush to the awards ceremony. 🙈🥹 Sorry! After memorizing the lines for the play, I had to remember 30 songs and then the choreography for four songs. My goldfish brain really couldn’t memorize everything. 😭😭😭 I’ll definitely memorize it all next time!!!!!!!😭😭😭
