SEVENTEEN Fans Call Out HYBE For “Stealing” The8’s Name

HYBE seems to have gotten itself in hot waters with fans once again, this time over suspected misuse of SEVENTEEN member THE8’s name.

The issue was brought to light with the recent debut of HYBE’s AI group, SYNDI8. Many fans claimed that apart from the use of a similar numerical, the group name’s pronunciation (Sin-di-eit) also bears a striking resemblance to THE8’s stage name. Many feel that this is an attempt on the label’s part to capitalize on the SEVENTEEN member’s well-established popularity.

Another point of contention among fans has been the similarity between the Japanese nicknames of THE8 and ZEROBASEONE member Zhang Hao. THE8, whose real name is Xu Minghao, has long been fondly referred to as “Hao Chan” by his Japanese fans. But the Japanese fanbase of Zhang Hao has also adapted the same nickname for the idol, much to the displeasure of SEVENTEEN fans.

With these issues at hand, many fans have resorted to expressing their anger toward HYBE through social media by trending tags that urge Pledis Entertainment to protect THE8’s artistic rights.

Neither Pledis Entertainment nor its parent company HYBE have responded to fans’ concerns.
