BTS RM’s Now-Deleted Instagram Update Has Fans Defending Him From Collective Criticism

His update came in the middle of his teammate’s DUI scandal.

BTS‘s RM shared a quick Instagram update via Stories to celebrate a win for his solo album, Right Place Wrong Person, ranking #7 on “The Genius Community’s 25 Best Albums of 2024 So Far”…

…except the update happened to come mid-scandal involving his teammate, Suga, who was caught driving an e-scooter under the influence.

The internet was quick to slam RM for being obtuse with the situation—which soon led the idol to remove the update.

Following the update and its deletion, though, K-Pop fans are coming together to defend him from the ongoing criticism.

For one, fans pointed out that RM is currently serving his enlistment duty in the South Korean military, which could have led to him being slow to the news of what had happened to Suga. Others pointed out that RM has consistently posted solo album-related updates, making this update no different from his usual content, regardless of Suga’s scandal.

Most agreed that slamming RM as guilty by association is collective criticism and simply unfair. The voice demanding online communities to refrain from “hating for the sake of hating” has grown significantly.

  • “If RM had any other intention except to celebrate, he wouldn’t have deleted the update. What’s wrong with you all, picking on someone who’s serving in the military?”
  • “I’m just going to disregard it since he did delete it ASAP.”
  • “I’m not RM’s fan, but I’ll say this. People online are so evil these days. It goes to all the online communities bashing him.”
  • “Are we holding him guilty by association? How funny. RM is not the one who got himself in trouble. Stop slamming him for what his teammate did.”
  • “It’s possible RM had no idea. He’s a soldier.”
  • “Did RM drink and rive? Why are people even picking on him? All the other BTS members are serving their military duties diligently. If you need someone to hate on, hate on the member who f*cked up.”

  • “Why are people f*cking picking on RM?”
  • “People calling him obtuse are the ones who are really obtuse. RM is not the one who f*cked up. Don’t pick on him.”
  • “It’s totally possible he didn’t know because he’s serving in the military.”
  • “He’s a soldier, he obviously had no idea what was happening. He also deleted it pretty quickly, so he’s not obtuse. He knows.”
  • “RM is a soldier in the ROK Army. It’s more than possible that he shared the update without realizing what happened outside the base. I’m sure when he found out and deleted the post, he was panicking hard.”
