In July, a woman from Hong Kong joined a tour of Jeju and visited a Korean sauna. According to her husband, she didn’t know photos weren’t allowed at the sauna and was caught after taking naked pictures of three Korean women.

Almost three months later, her husband appeared on a local TV show in Hong Kong to talk about what happened. In defending her, the husband emphasized what she had done was a simple mistake due to a love for taking photos and her having received no prior warning against photography in the sauna.

The tour guide didn’t tell her. No one told her. Additionally, she couldn’t understand the ‘no photos’ sign there. She likes taking pictures. People from Hong Kong love to take pictures while travelling, so as soon as we stepped off the plane, she went crazy taking pictures of everything. It was a mistake, not a wrongdoing.

However, the TV show got in touch with someone in the same tour group, and her story differed from the husband’s.

There was a notice on the door that said ‘no photos,’ and you had to go in completely naked. I have no idea how she managed to get in [with her phone]. The sign had text and a picture of a camera being crossed out. You could tell you couldn’t take photos as soon as you walked in. Everyone was naked.

The husband also further defended the woman’s actions by blaming them on cultural differences.

She loves travelling and taking photos. It’s not like she likes taking pictures of meaningless things such as obscene scenes and people taking a shower. The thing is, when we went to hot springs in Mainland China in the past, we always took photos there afterwards. Perhaps she got used to it and there was a cultural difference, so she made a mistake.

  • “You need to be reminded that you can’t take naked photos of other people? It’s just common sense. Would you normally go into the changing room to take naked photos of other people? Stop giving them airtime.”

  • “This couple doesn’t have any remorse at all. They just want to resolve the matter quickly for themselves. They’re just acting.”

  • “Stop giving them airtime; they don’t deserve help. They just don’t want to spend money hiring an attorney, so they got the TV show to help them! You need to hire an attorney even if it means you need to borrow money from someone, or else your wife is going to prison for a long time. You still don’t think anything was wrong with her actions, and you blame it on cultural differences. How laughable.”

  • “The man even said it’s not a wrongdoing but a mistake. Is it that difficult to say sorry to the victims? You’re speaking with such confidence without repenting and even blamed it on the tour guide for not saying you couldn’t take photos. You claimed she didn’t know and didn’t understand. How crazy. I support giving her a harsh judgment.”

  • “I just feel like they’re playing the victim. The groupmate didn’t even defend them. It was obvious that photos weren’t allowed.”

Currently, the woman is still in Jeju, awaiting further progress on her case without detention.
