Two K-Pop Groups Have Survived 2024’s Disbandment Predictions — One Didn’t

The “curse” continues?

The infamous “7-year curse,” a term that refers to the disbandment of K-Pop groups seven years after their debut, has proven true for many groups over the years, such as 2NE1. There are, however, many groups, like SEVENTEEN, that have broken the “curse” by renewing their contracts.

As 2024 marks the seventh year since several groups debuted in 2017, some fans were concerned that these groups might disband this year. One of these groups was THE BOYZ, a boy group that debuted on December 6, 2017. The group has remained active and engaged with their fans over the years, releasing multiple albums and participating in various events and tours.

Because of their steady activity and international popularity, many fans believed that THE BOYZ would break the seven-year curse. THE BOYZ are reportedly preparing to part ways with IST Entertainment as the expiration of their exclusive contract approaches in mid-December, but reports state that the members are committed to continuing together as a group.

Golden Child, a boy group that debuted on August 28, 2017, was also in danger of succumbing to the seven-year curse. On August 27, 2024, it was announced that 7 out of 10 members renewed their exclusive contracts. Since members TAGJi Beom, and Bo Min have decided not to renew their contracts, the group will continue as 7.

Unfortunately, Weki Meki fell victim to the “curse.” The group debuted on August 8, 2017, with their extended play Weme, featuring the lead single “I Don’t Like Your Girlfriend.” On June 7, 2024, Weki Meki’s agency, Fantagio, announced that the group would be disbanding after releasing their final single, “CoinciDestiny”. Weki Meki officially disbanded on August 8, 2024.
