NewJeans’ Hanni Gets Painfully Emotional On “Independent” Radio Show Appearance—Fellow Members Also Break Down
Celebrating Christmas, NewJeans members appeared on CBS radio’s Kim Hyun Jung’s News Show as independent artists.
Despite ADOR‘s statement discouraging the appearance, the members took to the station and proceeded with grace.
As teased, Hanni sang her original work, like “Weightless” and “Darling Darling,” and Danielle also covered her older sister Olivia Marsh‘s “First December With You.” Their unwavering live performances charmed the listeners—especially given the struggles that the members have been through in 2024.

While explaining her original work, “Darling Darling,” and why it was chosen for the radio show performance, Hanni couldn’t help but get emotional. She said, “The five of [them] would sing this song through the difficult times.”
Kim Jung Hyun: I feel like there was a reason you chose to sing this particular song. When we asked you for a solo performance, I’m sure you had a number of works to choose from. But you chose this one… Is there a reason?
Hanni: Of course. There were many reasons I chose to sing this song. First of all, this wasn’t a fully released song. When it was shared with Bunnies, I was in the process of writing it and… [Tears up]
Realizing she was tearing up, Hanni tried to lighten up the mood, commenting, “Oh, no, this is bad.” Danielle and Minji both encouraged Hanni…
Danielle: Oh, no! [Wipes Hanni’s tears]
Minji: Take your time!
Danielle: Oh, gosh! The tears are dropping!
…except, as Hanni continued to speak, Danielle and Hyein, too, became emotional.
Hanni: No, no. I’m going to finish talking! Please excuse these tears… [Smiles]
Kim Hyun Jung: Oh, no! Hyein is crying, too! Can we get some tissues here, please? Grab a lot.
Hanni: As I was saying, I was struggling through some difficult times. And because I play the guitar a lot, I naturally ended up writing a song about what I was experiencing. But the video that I made… I thought a long time [about releasing it]. The song… It was a very meaningful song to me, to us. So, how I shared it with everyone also felt like… It should be done right.

I thought, ‘Should we get together and sing it as a group?’ Or ‘should I just do a live broadcast to release the song?’ Do I just post the video, or what? I was so unsure… And even for me, as I was putting the video together, I would keep crying because I was still hurting. It was hard to show even the members, too. It was just hard to show it to anyone because I hadn’t… How should I put this? I hadn’t healed yet.
Kim Hyun Jung: …Is Danielle crying now, too?! Oh, no! What am I going to do with you precious girls? We were supposed to be celebrating jolly Christmas! [Laughs]
Hanni: Yes, right! That’s why I chose to sing this song today.
After getting through the emotional rollercoaster ride of an explanation, Hanni apologized and said the members don’t cry on air that often. To that, Kim Hyun Jung noted that Hanni’s original works are, without a doubt, comforting listeners who might be going through their own share of difficult times.
