At around 9pm KST on December 29, rescue authorities confirmed the final death toll to be 179.
A tragic plane crash at South Korea’s Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province has left 179 confirmed dead.
On December 29, 2024 (KST) around 9 AM, a Jeju Air passenger plane collided with a wall while attempting to land and caught on fire.
News outlets are reporting that the aircraft was carrying 181 people (175 passengers and 6 crew members) on its way back to Muan after departing from Bangkok, Thailand, earlier the same morning. Videos captured by witnesses at the scene show the airport struggling to come to a stop, colliding into a wall, and going up in flames with thick black smoke rising into the sky.
Korean fire and other authorities are working at the scene; the exact number of casualties is still being assessed.
This article originally stated that six people were rescued, according to YTN’s initial reports. Further updates have confirmed that two people were rescued. A Yonhap news report has since quoted Jeonnam Fire Department stating that “Of the 181 passengers, 2 have been rescued, and the majority are presumed dead.”
