Actor Na In Woo Addresses Military Exemption Controversy
Actor Na In Woo directly addressed the controversy surrounding his exemption from mandatory military service.
On January 9, KST, the team of MBC’s new drama, Motel California, held a press conference at the MBC Golden Mouse Hall in Mapo, Seoul. The event was attended by director Kim Hyung Min and cast members Lee Se Young, Na In Woo, Goo Won, and Choi Hee Jin, among others. This event marked Na In Woo’s first public appearance since he got embroiled in the enlistment exemption controversy.
In December, it was reported that Na In Woo had been exempted from military service. The actor was previously given a Grade 4 evaluation during his physical examination, which made him eligible for social service duty. But then three years passed and he still didn’t receive a summons from the Military Manpower Administration. After waiting, he reportedly became eligible for exemption due to the delay of three years.
The actor’s agency also issued a statement confirming the news, adding that they had nothing further to comment on. However, no clarification was offered as to why he was evaluated at Grade 4, which caused the controversy.
During the press meet for Motel California, Na was asked about the issue. He responded by saying that he was caught off-guard by the reports and chose to stay silent for the sake of the project.
To be honest, the articles (about the military exemption) came out while I was filming (Motel California) and I was caught off-guard. I received a call about it after filming was over and it was late at night. Since it was a sensitive issue, I had to make a decision quickly and I chose to remain silent.

The actor added that he didn’t let it show that the issue had affected him, since his fans like him for his bright and positive image. He also touched upon the questions about his military evaluation, stating that he couldn’t reveal the reason behind the Grade 4 assessment.
I can’t reveal my personal medical condition but I am speaking candidly now in hopes that people will accept me the way I am.

Meanwhile, Motel California is slated to premiere on January 10 at 9:50 PM KST.
