50 Billion Won K-Drama Shockingly Flops In Viewership Ratings

The ratings have dropped down from its premiere…

The highly anticipated tvN weekend drama When the Stars Gossip premiered on January 4 with a nationwide viewership rating of 3.3%, according to Nielsen Korea. However, the ratings soon dipped into the 2% range, a surprising downturn given the scale of the production.

This range is particularly disappointing when compared to its predecessor, Love Your Enemy, which started at 3.5% and soared to 6.5% by its second episode, maintaining strong ratings throughout its run.

Currently competition series have also outshone When the Stars Gossip. MBC’s Motel California debuted at 4.5%, while SBS’s Love Scout surged to 11.3% within four episodes. JTBC’s The Tale of Lady Ok reached a peak of 11.1%, demonstrating robust viewer interest.

What makes this even more shocking is the show’s production. The K-Drama’s preparation took five years, with a staggering ₩50.0 billion KRW (about $34.1 million USD) — a scale rarely seen in television productions. Featuring a unique space station backdrop, When the Stars Gossip was crafted by acclaimed screenwriter Seo Sook Hyang (Pasta, Jealousy Incarnate) and director Park Shin Woo (It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Love in the City). The cast includes Gong Hyo Jin, a trusted name in the industry, and Lee Min Ho, a prominent Hallyu star, raising expectations for the series.

Despite this promising foundation, the show has struggled to gain traction in Korea.

With 12 episodes remaining, there’s fortunately still room for the show to recover. While reception has been mixed, some viewers remain intrigued by its novel space setting and strong performances. Whether When the Stars Gossip can redeem itself remains to be seen.
