The Taipei District Prosecutors Office is currently investigating a fatal injury case that took place at a Buddhist monastery. An autopsy determined that the victim, a woman identified by her surname Cai, died due to rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdomyolysis is a rare, life-threatening muscle injury that causes the muscles to deteriorate at a rapid pace. It is caused by a crush injury, alcohol or drug use, or excessive exercise.

Surveillance footage showed Cai’s body being loaded into a cart, bound with tape, and transported back to the monastery from a tea house by three people: Abbess Wu Huizhu, Li Yuanyuan, and Jiang Pengyu. Jiang also emptied Cai’s bank account.

These individuals had seemingly coordinated their testimonies to hide information from the police in order to protect Wang Yun, their spiritual leader. Taiwanese actor Lee Wei, who appeared in numerous TV series from 2000 to 2018, allegedly instructed other followers to withhold Wang’s name to shield the monastery community from any negative impact Cai’s case might have on it.

Lee and his wife, Jian, were originally questioned by prosecutors as witnesses. Lee was questioned four times, and Jian twice. During their most recent questioning, however, prosecutors reclassified both as suspects. The Da’an Police Precinct was then instructed to search Lee and Jian’s shared residence.
