“Learn Korean With BTS” Already Too Confusing? These 4 Tips Will Help You Get The Best Out Of It
The first three episodes of Learn Korean with BTS just dropped on Weverse, and ARMYs already have mixed opinions. On one hand, it’s great to have a BTS-oriented tool to learn Korean. On the other, many fans are finding the lessons really difficult to understand. If you’re one of the confused ARMYs, never fear. Here are 4 tips that will make Learn Korean with BTS actually teach you what you want to learn.
1. Learn Hangul first
The first episode of Learn Korean with BTS aims to teach viewers the Korean alphabet, known as Hangul. However, most fans are finding the method of teaching unclear.
If you’re struggling to match the Korean letters with their sounds, try learning Hangul on its own first. The Korean alphabet is actually famous for how easy it is to learn; you can easily pick it up in just a few hours.
The best way to learn Hangul is with a video or audio resource. Romanization charts can give you a rough idea of how letters are pronounced, but there are some differences between Korean and English pronunciation that you can only learn by hearing them. This video is a great place to start.
2. Turn on the subtitles
This may seem like an obvious tip, but remember to keep the subtitles turned on while you’re learning. While it is possible to learn a language through immersion—i.e. not using your native language at all—you’ll progress through Learn Korean with BTS much better using subs.
To turn subtitles on, open your chosen Learn Korean with BTS video on Weverse, then click the white button marked “CC” in the bottom right corner of the video window. Right now, the available options are Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and English.
The subtitles will tell you what the Korean text on the screen says. This will help you to understand the phrases you’re learning and how to use them in conversation.
3. Use all 4 language skills
Whenever you’re learning a language, there are four main skills you need to master to become fluent: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To become a pro at all those skills, you should use all of them during your learning process.
When you get to a new phrase in Learn Korean with BTS, practice your listening by repeating each section of the video until the words become clear. Next, practice your reading by looking at the new phrase and remembering which sound each letter corresponds to you.
Don’t be embarrassed to practice your speaking by sounding out the word out loud to yourself. When that’s done, grab a notebook and write down the word in your best Korean handwriting. All this will help solidify the new phrase in your mind so you don’t forget it.
4. Use other resources
Learn Korean with BTS looks like a great new resource. It’s fun, and it’s related to something you love, which will make it a very useful tool in your Korean learning arsenal. But you can’t learn any language with just one resource.
Don’t be afraid to look online for other free tools and resources to help you along your journey. The more sources you use to learn a phrase, the better you’ll understand it. Other resources can also help you understand the different tense, formality, and politeness levels you’ll be hearing throughout the Learn Korean with BTS series.
Some good recommendations include apps like Duolingo and Lingodeer, videos from Talk To Me In Korean, and websites like HowtoStudyKorean.
