MAMAMOO’s Hwasa Reveals The Struggle We All Deal With — The Meaning Behind “Maria”

If Hwasa tells you to love yourself, please love yourself.

MAMAMOO’s Hwasa opened up about the lyrical inspiration for her new solo single “Maria” and it may hit close to home.

She revealed “Maria” is a song about the inner conflict that occurs within one’s personality.

Whether you choose to be a “good” or “bad” person, both have their ups and downs.

If you’re too nice, you end up being taken advantage of. But you also don’t want to be a bad person, either.

— Hwasa

Struggling between being nice comes with the consequence of seeming weak and having people take advantage of you. Being “bad” may make you seem stronger, but it can feel unnatural if that’s not who you truly are and be offputting to others.

Doesn’t everyone struggle with this? You feel like you’re being taken advantage of, then you want to become a stronger person, but you find it hard to do that.

— Hwasa

This inner conflict may be something that many kindhearted people find themselves struggling with, as they try to find the balance between being “nice” and “strong.” Hwasa’s perspective, however, is to disregard that battle.

The message behind the song is to not waste your energy struggling with all of that.

— Hwasa

She believes that just accepting yourself as you are and being whoever you truly are is the way to overcome this struggle.

It’s a message that I tell myself, too.

— Hwasa

She hopes this song can be comforting to those struggling with a similar issue and that it can touch “all of the Marias around the world.”

After all, she made the lyrics very clear!
