Here Are 5 Of The Saddest Moments In The History Of K-Pop Award Shows
Award shows are usually a time of celebration, but that doesn’t mean that there haven’t been some heartbreaking moments during them. Here’s a list of some of the saddest moments in the history of K-Pop award shows.
1. SEVENTEEN getting a black ocean when they were rookies
Black oceans are one of the worst things a K-Pop group can experience. This is when various fan groups come together and purposefully turn off their lightsticks and remain quiet during a group’s performance, as a way of protesting. This happened to SEVENTEEN during the 2015 MAMA when they were just rookies.
2. DEAN getting yelled at during his speech
During the 2017 Gaon Chart Music Awards, DEAN won the “Discovery of the Year” for R&B. However, during his speech, some malicious “fans” of other groups who were candidates for the award could be heard screaming at DEAN and not allowing him to make a proper speech. Here’s the full video below.
3. WANNA ONE’s speech at the 2018 Melon Music Awards (MMA)
When WANNA ONE won “Best Record of The Year” at the 2018 MMA, it was a bittersweet moment. That’s because WANNA ONE was going to disband not long after this. WANNA ONE was created through the show Produce 101 Season 2 and was a project group that was only supposed to last for a year and a half.
During the speech, the members alluded to the fact that they didn’t have much time left together as a group and tearfully thanked their fans for making their dreams come true.

4. Apink getting disrespected during the 2019 KBS Gayo Daechukje
During the 2019 KBS Gayo Daechukje, Apink was performing their song “Eung Eung”. Once the song ended, the members turned to the dancers and were preparing for another dance performance. However, the performance was cut short by KBS. This angered lots of fans, as they demanded an apology from KBS.
The Apink members would soon talk about the incident and explained that it was an accident and that KBS had apologized to them. However, leader Chorong couldn’t contain her tears explaining their disappointment, as they felt sorry to their fans.
The reason why we were disappointed wasn’t just because of our performance today, but to be honest, the only reason why we go to the end of the year ceremonies is 100% solely for the fans.
We wanted to show the fans even just one more memorable stage, so we went but we’re given such a small amount of time. In that short time period, we have to perform but can’t complete a full song. Our agency, dancers, and the members tried very hard to show all kinds of things in that short time period. We tried, but we weren’t lucky. They told us to cut 10~15 seconds, and we couldn’t do everything that we wanted, so we were very disappointed. They say it’s because there are so many groups that need to perform.
But we get greedy and want to show you more but we aren’t allowed, so… Anyways, we honestly didn’t have to perform, but we only decided to perform solely for the fans.
I don’t have any regrets since it was an accident. I’m just frustrated.
— Chorong
5. BTS’s speech at the 2018 MAMA
BTS has been breaking records for multiple years, and their popularity seems to only be getting bigger through the years. However, when BTS won “Artist of The Year” at the 2018 MAMA, they gave a heartbreaking speech.
The members tearfully talked about how stressed they were during the year, and Jin revealed that they considered disbanding due to it.
The members could be seen tearing up after Jin’s statement, especially V.
BTS’s speech also had an impact on the other idols present at the award show, as many of them were seen crying while listening.
