Comments On BTS’s Debut News Article Show Just How Far They Have Come
In light of BTS‘s amazing achievement in becoming the first Korean artist to reach No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, online community boards have begun comparing people’s reactions to BTS from debut until now. BTS wasn’t exactly welcomed during the beginning of their career and was made fun of just because of their names.
One community board revealed a news article that was released on June 12, 2013, stating that a new boy group had debuted. The title of the article reads, ‘Bangtan Sonyeondan Debuts, Role Model is BIG BANG, We Will Survive’. In this one news article alone, over 700 comments were written with most bashing or making fun of their name. Many felt that their goal to be like their role model BIG BANG was too high of a goal while some felt that they could never come close to a group that was of such high status.
Taking a look at some of the comments, most are about the name ‘Bangtan Sonyeondan’ as they felt that their name would hinder them from gaining popularity at all.
Some netizens even felt that the name sounded like a North Korean group or a group from Japan.
Others felt that the member names Suga and Rap Monster were strange and that they would need to change it in order to make it in the industry.
They also felt that BTS was using BIG BANG’s name as a way to get their name known and asked that they find their own concept instead.
Seven years later, BTS is now the biggest boy band in the world that uses their power and influence to spread positivity and love through music and their message. They have continued to break barriers across fashion, music, culture and has become the forefront in connecting K-Pop with the Western world.
From topping charts, performing at the Grammys, and breaking their own records, they have taken the world by storm and this is just the beginning. Although their start might have been rough, they continued to push forward with the support and love from ARMYs all over the world.
