(G)I-DLE Becomes The First 4th Generation Idol Group To Debut At #1 On Melon Chart
(G)I-DLE‘s new song “HWAA” was released just hours ago, but it’s already a certified hit. In fact, the group just became the first of the fourth generation to debut at no.1 on South Korea’s Melon chart!
Back in August last year, (G)I-DLE blew everyone away with their tropical summer hit, “DUMDi DUMDi”. Reaching 17.6 million views on YouTube in 24 hours, “DUMDi DUMDi” broke the group’s music video record and became their most-awarded song on music shows with six wins.
Five months later, the popular group is back with their latest Korean release, “HWAA”. Written and co-produced by leader Soyeon, “HWAA” expresses the feelings after a breakup through its beautiful visuals and melodic instrumental, both inspired by traditional Korean and east-Asian culture.
The choreography is some of their most impressive to date too, beginning with intricate formations and following up with expressive hand movements.
Given how (G)I-DLE have outdone themselves once again, it’s no surprise the song is already doing well on the charts. However, “HWAA” is blowing away all expectations with just how well it’s doing.
Alongside debuting at no.1 on the Genie and Bugs charts, it also hit no.1 on the Melon Realtime chart. This makes (G)I-DLE the first fourth generation K-Pop group in history to ever debut at the top of Melon Realtime!
Hitting no.1 on Melon is no easy feat. The chart is by far the largest in South Korea, with a market share of almost 50% of the popular. Before “HWAA”, the last girl song to debut at no.1 on Melon Realtime was BLACKPINK‘s “How You Like That” six months ago.
“HWAA” is also one of only three fourth generation girl group songs to ever reach no.1 on Melon Realtime at all, alongside IZ*ONE‘s “Fiesta” and “Secret Story of the Swan”.
The sweetest part? In a recent interview with W Korea on YouTube, several of the (G)-IDLE members revealed the thing they wanted to do most in 2021 was reach first place on the music charts.
Congratulations to (G)I-DLE! Keep an eye out to see how many more records they hit with “HWAA”, and don’t forget to check out the music video for yourself.
