A recent photo of the actress in a wheelchair sparked concerns over her health and led a friend to expose an instance of physical and mental abuse the actress suffered at the hands of her company. The friend loosely linked her current condition to the abuse that she has faced throughout the years.

Along with these details, the actress also spoke at length about her health issues, giving particular attention to her mental health issues throughout the years. Beginning in 2019, Zhao Lusi stated that she began experiencing depression symptoms and, in 2021, sought treatment after her anxiety manifested in physical symptoms.

These physical manifestations continued in 2023 and worsened in 2024, causing dizziness and joint pain, among other symptoms.

In 2019, I began experiencing depressive symptoms. People said, ‘Don’t make a big deal out of it,’ or ‘Think positively, and everything will be fine.’ I thought I was being overly sensitive and didn’t take my mental health seriously.

In 2021, I started feeling as if bugs were crawling on me, accompanied by needle-like sensations and allergies. Even after taking medication and getting injections, the symptoms didn’t improve. I eventually sought a psychologist to help manage my anxiety.

In 2023, I faced pneumonia, emphysema, pityriasis rosea, hives, night sweats, sudden awakenings, and nerve deafness. I also dealt with the passing of a loved one and several cancer diagnoses within the family—all within a short time. However, the magnitude of the events overshadowed my emotions, and I continued to neglect myself.

It wasn’t until 2024 that I began experiencing severe physical symptoms like frequent dry heaving, dizziness, joint pain, and worsening allergies. I assumed these were normal side effects of targeted allergy medication.

In the post, Zhao Lusi seems to openly state that she has depression and warns of preconceived assumptions about the disease, expressing a hope that she can spread awareness.

I’ve never publicly mentioned my illness before because I didn’t want it to be labeled as a “publicity stunt.” However, given the current circumstances, I hope this can raise awareness.

Feeling depressed can be an emotion, but depression as an illness is a medical condition. It cannot be resolved by simply ‘thinking positively’ or ‘talking it out.’ To those who share my feelings of being ‘truly understood’ — whether or not others understand is no longer important. What’s worse is being caught in a cycle of endless explanations while being unable to save yourself. Understanding mental health and prioritizing mental health care is incredibly important.

Regret is a useless emotion. ‘So take this ‘special time’ as an opportunity to break free from past inner conflicts and rebuild yourself.’

She also revealed her official diagnosis of Dissociative Disorder with Anxiety in what appeared to be discharge papers, along with the treatment plan, which appears to include therapy, counseling, and medication.  According to the Mayo Clinic, dissociative disorders are “mental health conditions that involve experiencing a loss of connection between thoughts, memories, feelings, surroundings, behavior, and identity,” and can be caused by trauma.

This document also included a diagnosis of malnutrition. In another post,  Zhao Lusi revealed that her weight once dropped to just 36.7 KG, but she has gained weight with her parents’ assistance.

I did not manage to take a pic of my current weight in time. Under my parents’ strict supervision, my weight has increased to 41 KG, please do not worry!  Before this, I didn’t have time to diet either and always maintained my weight. They’re making nutritious meals for me every day and blaming themselves over it.

Along with the post, the actress shared other updates, including some showing herself eating independently and walking, an improvement in her condition.

With mental health being a topic that is still not openly discussed and is surrounded in misconceptions, it is amazing that Zhao Lusi has opened up about her health this way.
