The 7.7 magnitude earthquake actually hit Mandalay, Myanmar, while neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand felt the tremors. The impact was significantly bigger in Thailand, where the initial temblor was followed by a 6.4 magnitude aftershock. People in Bangkok evacuated from their buildings and were cautioned to stay outside in case more waves followed. Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called an emergency meeting following the quake to assess its impact.
The US Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ Center of Geosciences concurred that the midday tremor was shallow, occurring at a depth of 10 km, with its epicenter in Myanmar. Despite the horrifying visuals, so far, Thailand has not reported any casualties as of now. Initially, the police, told the Associated Press that they had no immediate information on how many workers were present at the site at the time of the collapse. However, according to the latest reports, 43 workers are said to be trapped inside the collapsed building, and one injured man was successfully pulled out of the rubble by rescue workers.
