Taiwanese politician, Ho Chihning, who has been called Taiwan’s “Most Beautiful Politician” and “Most Beautiful Village Chief,” was approached by a drunk man while out on the streets of Tokyo on June 15. The man, who is not a Japanese citizen, according to Ho Chihning, approached her outside of Otsuka Station while intoxicated.

He spoke to Ho Chihning in a mix of English and Japanese in an attempt to allegedly proposition Ho Chihning for sex. After politely rejecting his advances more than once, the politician tries to escape the man by entering a nearby bookstore. Sadly, although an employee reportedly noticed her predicament, they did nothing to help her.

Finding no help at the bookstore, Ho Chihning left while filming the man. As she did so, the drunk man groped her backside twice. In response, Ho Chihning kicked him in the crotch.  The man then tried to flee from the police officers who arrested him soon after.

After the incident made headlines, Ho Chihning posted a follow-up on Instagram on June 17. She wants everyone to know that the experience has not soured her opinion of Japan, and she didn’t let it ruin her trip either.

Read her full statement here:

Good evening, everyone.

The harassment incident I encountered in Japan has made it to the Japanese news and even sparked some political comments aimed at straining Taiwan-Japan relations (as someone sent to me).

So, I’d like to clarify the situation here.
The person who harassed me was not Japanese but a foreigner (though I don’t know from which country).

Despite being harassed in Japan, I won’t harbor any resentment towards Japan.

I am very grateful to the Japanese police for their efforts in trying to catch the suspect. They even arranged for a translator to help me with my statement. The Japanese police worked very hard, and I am extremely thankful for their efforts🤝.

I remember at the end of the statement, there was a question: ‘Will you still come to Japan in the future?’ I answered without hesitation: ‘Yes!’

I also learned that while abroad, it is best not to go out alone late at night. Due to unfamiliarity with the language and environment, even if I seek help, I may not know how to communicate.

I still love Japan, especially the fact that there are so many Ditto [Pokémon] here💜💜💜. I believe this harassment incident is just an isolated case and will not affect my positive view of Japan. We should not completely deny the safety of Japan just because of one foreigner’s actions.

I also want to remind all the beautiful girls from Taiwan that in any situation, protecting yourself is the most important thing because you may not always encounter someone who will help you; you can always rely on yourself💪.

Lastly, let me once again promote #TaiwanJapanFriendship ❤️. Ditto is the best🎉🎉
