Hong Kong Successfully Hosts A Star-Studded Countdown Concert To Celebrate The New Year
With the pandemic still raging worldwide, year-end celebrations have been forced to be kept to a minimum. Despite this limitation, Hong Kong—a city famous for its epic large-scale firework shows and event celebrations during the holiday season—has safely held a countdown concert with a star-studded artist line-up!
On December 31, 2021, the Hong Kong New Year Countdown Concert welcomed its audience to the West Kowloon Cultural District, an open space where visitors can spend a relaxing day out by the harbor. To prevent the potential spread of COVID-19, the Hong Kong Tourism Board put various preventive measures in place, such as requiring vaccination records to enter the ticket draw and checking temperatures at the venue to attend the event.
Before the show, several award-winning veteran singers, including AGA, Alfred Hui, Gin Lee, Jay Fung, and Joyce Cheng, met with the media for a quick photo and Q&A session.
The show kicked off at 10PM local time with three dance songs: Joyce Cheng’s “@princejoyce,” boy group MIRROR member Anson Lo‘s “Megahit,” and Gin Lee’s “Breathe.” Anson Lo recently won the Best New Asian Artist (Mandarin) Award at the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards (also known as the MAMAs).
The audience then got treated to breathtaking performances by AGA, Jay Fung, as well as MIRROR members Anson Kong, Ian Chan, and Jer Lau.
The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra also made an appearance, collaborating with six of the artists at the show. Singer Alfred Hui and MIRROR’s Edan Lui performed their songs for the first time on this night accompanied by the orchestra. Edan Lui also wowed the crowd with his well-known talent of singing to his own piano performance.
As the final performance of 2021, MIRROR’s Keung To performed his new song “Mirror in Mirror,” which has yet to be officially released at the time of the concert.
Then, right before the clock struck midnight, the artists gathered on stage to welcome the new year. The audience got to celebrate the countdown with a mini fireworks show, glistening the sky and bidding farewell to 2021!
Celebrating the beginning of 2022, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra played several beautiful arrangements for the audience!
To close out the concert, MIRROR performed three songs as a group. This 12-member boy group has been gaining much popularity and making headlines not only in Hong Kong but also around the world. Aside from Anson Lo winning at the 2021 MAMAs, Keung To has been selected by Variety magazine as an “International Breakout Star of 2021,” too.
