Otokonoko (“male daughter” or “male girl”) is a Japanese term for men who have a culturally feminine gender expression or indulge in cross-dressing. This form of self-expression, which took off in manga and internet culture in the 2000s, harkens back to earlier traditions, such as male actors playing female roles in kabuki theater.
