Rookie Girl Group Becomes A Hot Topic For All The Wrong Reasons
A girl group’s first public performance went viral, but unfortunately, not in the most positive way.
UNi is a four-member girl group based in Hong Kong. The group released their debut single album on September 27, 2024.

In October, UNi held their debut showcase in a shopping mall. While they certainly caught the public’s attention, it was not the positive response they had hoped for.

“Everyone else needs to listen to this song. So there’s a new independent group in Hong Kong – UNi. They held a debut showcase yesterday at THE ONE [shopping mall]. I wanted to support them, but when I clicked on the video…f*ck. It’s wild. I’m not trying to be mean but…bruh I can’t stand it.
They were originally a five-member group. One person left but they didn’t rearrange the choreography. Did they keep it in loving memory of the former member or something? Pay for singing and dancing lessons first. No wonder they’re independent. I don’t want to listen to them even if you paid me…so, everyone should listen to it, too!!! I wonder if the staff at THE ONE can get treated for damaged eardrums while working!!”

Netizens noted that the members sang out of tune during the performance.
They also thought the choreography was a mess.
After their performance went viral, UNi’s leader, Szeching, addressed the situation personally.

“Hi everyone, I’m UNi’s leader Szeching.
Firstly, I’m very thankful to have performed at THE ONE for our debut show. Thank you to all the staff at THE ONE and our distribution company for arranging the debut press conference.
Thank you, everyone, for supporting UNi’s debut showcase and giving us various feedback. I’ve received all of it. After thinking about it for the past few days, I admit that I didn’t manage to show 100% of my skills. I also acknowledge that mistakes were made that day. Therefore, I’m not going to refute any of the criticisms. Instead, I’m thankful for everyone’s precious views, allowing me and my team to improve. Thank you.
This was our first performance on stage. Because we were nervous, we lost our handle on the song. Additionally, since it was in a large open space, we couldn’t hear our voices (it was as if we were deaf and couldn’t hear our own voices). As a result, the performance was inadequate. Of course, our experience was also insufficient.
There were many regrets about this performance. As independent artists, we don’t have a lot of help from professionals. From the song, music video, and choreography to the equipment, stage, backdrop, and support slogans that day, we handled everything ourselves. Of course, we were inadequate in this aspect, so it shouldn’t be an excuse for me and my group members. However, this was a significant learning experience for me and the team.
I and my members will definitely take more lessons after this. I hope we can give the audience a performance they deserve next time.”
