She did her own detective work before contacting the police.

How well do you know your spouse? For one woman, the answer was “not well enough” after she made a disturbing discovery about her husband.

This past summer, a 31-year-old woman in Japan began to receive over 100 nuisance phone calls a day. Every time she picked up the phone, no one answered. Although it isn’t uncommon for people to be randomly harassed by robocallers, telemarketers, and scammers, the woman began to notice a disturbing pattern that raised her suspicions.

Whenever her husband–who had brushed off her concerns about the calls–was playing video games, sleeping, or with her, her phone wouldn’t ring. To confirm her suspicions, she invited him to go shopping with her one day to observe him. As she predicted, she did not receive a single nuisance call the entire time they were together.

After she reported the calls to the police, officers confirmed that her husband was behind the calls. He had masked his identity by making the calls private. His reasoning? Though he and his wife had a seemingly harmonious relationship, he was jealous and disliked his wife speaking to other people on the phone. After finding out that she had spoken to another man, he began to harass her with silent phone calls.

Police arrested the man on September 4. In Japan, making nuisance phone calls is a criminal offense akin to stalking that can result in a one-year prison sentence or a fine of up to 1 million yen (approximately $6,704 USD) for causing the victim psychological distress.
