These Are The 10 Oldest K-Pop Girl Groups That Are Still Active

Not too many girl groups make it past the “7 year curse”.

The top 10 oldest active K-Pop boy groups have already been looked at, so now it’s the girls’ turn! Interestingly, the oldest active boy groups are much older than the oldest active girl groups, which you can see by comparing the two lists. Not a lot of girl groups make it past the “7 year curse”, with just 8 groups on this list breaking that number but all of the boy groups on the other list surpassing it by several years. Still, these ladies deserve recognition for their perseverance! Check them out below.

10. Pungdeng-E: Debuted December 11, 2013 (6 years ago)

Pungdeng-E is a group under DOMA Entertainment that consists of 3 members that go by the stage names Red, Blue, and Yellow. They have a unique concept with each of the girls using their own regional satoori, or dialect. Though they haven’t found a huge surge of popularity yet, they do have a niche appeal that some fans enjoy, with unique music videos and lyrics which are different from the norm in K-Pop!

9. AOA: Debuted July 30, 2012 (7 years ago)

AOA has been in a lot of drama lately due to bullying allegations and other scandals, but when they debuted, they had 8 members that joined under FNC Entertainment. Youkyung was the first to leave the group in 2016, followed by Choa in 2017, Mina in 2019, and most recently Jimin in 2020 due to the allegations from Mina against her. The remaining four are still together, however, and they even became trending after their incredible performances on Queendom that helped boost their popularity in 2019 after members had left.

8. EXID: Debuted February 16, 2012 (8 years ago)

EXID is still made up of the 5 original members that joined when they debuted in 2012 under AB Entertainment: Solji, LE, Hani, Hyerin, and Jeonghwa. They did leave AB Entertainment in 2016, however, and were under Banana Culture until 2019 when Hani and Jeonghwa decided to leave the company. Then, in 2020, the remaining 3 also left the company. Despite this, however, the group is still considered active and will hopefully release new music together soon!

7. Apink: Debuted April 19, 2011 (9 years ago)

Apink still has nearly all of the original members they debuted with under Play M Entertainment, apart from Yookyung, who left in 2013 to focus on her studies. They found a lot of success in both South Korea and Japan, and have remained one of the most active groups on this list in recent years, with their last hit being the well-received “Dumhdurum”, which was actually their first song in 5 years to reach the #1 spot on Melon!

6. Rania: Debuted April 6, 2011 (9 years ago)

Like many other groups on this list, Rania has been through numerous member line-up changes. It’s actually pretty much too messy to try to explain briefly, but the group debuted under DR Music with 5 members, all of whom had left by mid-2016. They went through several other line-up changes between then and now, but the current line-up consists of 5 members: Hyeme, Youngheun, Leia, Judy, and Fatou. They also just rebranded under the name B.S, short for “Black Swan”, in June of 2020.

5. Brave Girls: Debuted March 31, 2011 (9 years ago)

Brave Girls has been through a ton of member line-up changes in their 9 years, but the group is still considered active under Brave Entertainment, if without a comeback for a long time. They debuted originally as a 5-member group, and after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus came back with 7 members in 2016, though 3 of the original members had been replaced with the 5 new ones. As of 2017, however, none of the original 5 are with the group any longer, and only 4 of the five that joined in 2016 are still active: Minyoung, Yujeong, Eunji, and Yuna.

4. Davichi: Debuted February 4, 2008 (12 years ago)

Davichi is a duo group that has had the same two members, Haeri and Minkyung, since their debut. Their name is derived from a Korean phrase meaning “shining over everything”. They’re well-known for singing a lot of OSTs for K-Dramas, and focus more on an R&B style that has kept them popular but not as talked about in the K-Pop community as more pop-sounding groups.

3. Girls’ Generation: Debuted August 8, 2007 (12 years ago)

Girls’ Generation was known as the “nation’s girl group” in their prime, originally debuting with 9 members and much beloved by South Korea as a whole. They technically have 8 members now after Jessica was removed in 2014, though Tiffany, Seohyun and Sooyoung left SM Entertainment in October of 2017 and their status with the group is pretty unknown. Unfortunately they haven’t had a group comeback since then, with the members pursuing solo careers and the sub-unit Girls’ Generation-Oh!GG coming out with “Lil’ Touch”, but nothing else.

2. Brown Eyed Girls: Debuted March 2, 2006 (14 years ago)

Brown Eyed Girls is the oldest group to still have all of its original members! They debuted under Mystic Entertainment with 4 members: JeA, Narsha, Miryo, and Gain. They’re most well-known for their popular hit “Abracadabra”, and even promoted in Japan for a while in 2011. In 2016, they were announced to be the oldest girl group without any member line-up changes, with a whole decade behind them! And even though Narsha left Mystic Entertainment in 2018, she still promotes both with the group.

1. Gavy NJ: Debuted on November 11, 2005 (14 years ago)

Gavy NJ, the oldest active K-Pop girl group, was originally introduced as a “project group” under Goodberry Entertainment called Gavy NJ Project Group H7 Miin, and debuted with 3 members in 2006 that are different than the trio is today. The original members were Hyemin, Heeyoung, and Sihyeon; however, Hyemin left in 2010 and was briefly replaced by Misty, who left in 2012, after Heeyoung left in 2011. They were replaced by current members Jenny and Gunji, and the final original member, Sihyeon, left in 2016 to be replaced by current member Seorin. So even though none of the original members are left, they’re still considered the same group!
