Koreans Are Dying For These Disbanded Girl Groups To Make A Comeback
1. Wonder Girls
Known as South Korea’s Retro Queens, their hit singles “Tell Me”, “So Hot”, and “Nobody” swept the K-Pop world into a Wonder Girls frenzy only to leave it behind for a U.S. debut that fell flat. In 2013, Sohee left the company and Sunye left the company; but the remaining members – Yubin, Yeeun, Hyerim and newly returned Sunmi – made a valiant attempt to keep the Wonder Girls dream alive. In 2017, JYP Entertainment announced that Wonder Girls were disbanding with only Yubin and Hyerim renewing their contracts.
2. KARA
KARA was famous for their pretty and natural appeal, plus addicting dance moves that had everyone swaying to their tunes. They also hit it big in Japan, and broke several records on the Oricon chart! But in 2014, Nicole and Jiyoung decided not to renew their contracts. Although the remaining members tried to make it work with new member Youngji – Gyuri, Seungyeon, and Hara decided not to renew their contracts in 2016.
3. 4Minute
One of the original “girl crush” groups, 4Minute was all about confident and powerful songs. Their look & sound was a hit, not just in Korea, but all over the world. They released their final single as a group, “Hate”, in January 2016 and announced their disbandment in June 2016. All members except for Hyuna decided not to renew their contracts with Cube Entertainment.
4. 2NE1
2NE1, once known as BIGBANG’s little sisters, was loved for their unique fashion, sound, and generally not being afraid to try new things as a group. They were popular internationally and regularly worked with artists overseas like will.i.am and Japanese hip-hop duo m-flo. Following the suspension of Bom’s contract due to her 2014 drug scandal, the other members started to work on individual projects. In April 2016, YG Entertainment confirmed the departure of Minzy and later that November they announced the disbandment of the group.
5. Rainbow
The seven-member group from DSP Media were just as bright and colorful as their name suggested. They found success after releasing various songs in Japan and sub-unit singles as well. In particular, sub-unit Rainbow Blaxx’s single “Cha Cha” was the fourth most viewed K-Pop music video globally in January 2014. However, in October 2016, it was confirmed that the members had chosen not to resign with DSP and Rainbow would be disbanding.
6. SISTAR
SISTAR was affectionately called the “Queens Of Summer” for releasing bops perfect for summer vacation year after year. They were also known as “fit-dols” for being incredibly in shape and being styled in gorgeous stage outfits that showed off their beautiful bodies. In May 2017, they announced that their title track “Lonely” would be their last comeback after 7 years together.
7. miss A
miss A debuted as the fastest girl group to win number one on a music show with their debut song, “Bad Girl Good Girl”. They became extremely popular in China, especially with two Chinese members, and Suzy had become a Hallyu star through her acting. In May 2016, Jia left the group and Min left in November 2017 when her contract with JYP ended. Finally, in December 2017, JYP Entertainment confirmed that the group had disbanded.
8. I.O.I.
The top 11 girls of Produce 101 Season 1 were hand-picked by the nation’s producer and loved from the start. Together, they released 2 EP’s & six singles, with “Very Very Very” being their first music show win. I.O.I. promoted together from April 2016 to January 2017, and have returned to their respective companies since then!
