7 False K-Pop Dating Rumors That Ended With A Plot Twist
False dating rumors can be created by minor misunderstandings, from idols wearing the same clothing items, posting similar photos on social media, or photos of idols taken out of context.
Here are seven times idols were wrapped up in false dating rumors that ended in a plot twist, leaving the idols involved to have the last laugh.
1. PSY and Girls’ Generation’s Yoona
In 2012, a Chinese tabloid falsely alleged that PSY was secretly seeing Girls’ Generation‘s Yoona. The false rumors began when images of Yoona began circulating where she wore a hat and hood while walking next to an unknown gentleman falsely identified as PSY.
When speculation began, Yoona clarified on an episode of Happy Together that the image was taken on the set of Running Man while she was filming, and the man next to her was not PSY but the show’s director.
2. Triple H
Triple H was a CUBE Entertainment sub-unit consisting of HyunA, Pentagon‘s Hui, and DAWN, who was also in Pentagon at the time.
Their provocative and sexy concept led to mixed reception from netizens, and the members’ skinship during their 2018 promotions led to discomfort from some, who criticized their actions. This led to a reverse dating rumor when netizens left hate comments unfairly blaming HyunA for allegedly making Hui and DAWN feel uncomfortable.
-
“What, is she lonely these days? She’s like a kitten, all up in the boys’ faces and stuff. This doesn’t look good at all. It makes her look desperate.”
-
“Wow, think about all the hate this group would have gotten if the roles were switched and it was male touching up the females.”
- “I don’t think the boys are comfortable with this. I don’t see that. I see that they feel pressured to be okay with putting up with her.”
Unbeknownst to them, HyunA and DAWN had already secretly been in a relationship for two years at that point, and are now happily engaged.
3. TVXQ’s Changmin
In 2010, TVXQ‘s Changmin attended a Michael Jackson tribute concert in support of his fellow member Yunho, who was performing. While in the audience, a Japanese newspaper falsely reported that Changmin was on a “date” with a “mystery woman.”
The “mystery woman” was not a woman at all; he was quickly identified as fellow SM Entertainment labelmate SHINee‘s Minho.
4. BTS’s V and a “mystery woman”
In 2017, photos of BTS‘s V eating dinner with a “mystery woman” began circulating, causing netizens to believe he was spotted on a date.
In a hilarious plot twist, the other person was actually LIMITLESS member VOK, also known as Jang Moonbok, who had risen to notoriety after appearing on Produce 101 and Superstar K.
The two 95-liners became close and V had pranked fans with Jang Moonbok’s long hair before, showing their playful friendship.
5. f(x)’s Victoria
In 2013, f(x)‘s Victoria shared a photo of her dinner that was soon picked apart by netizens. An upside-down spoon on the plate showed the reflection of TVXQ‘s Changmin, which caused false dating rumors to begin.
It has since been clarified that it was TVXQ’s Changmin, but the plot twist was that it was a group dinner with a few of SM Entertainment’s staff members.
The reflection of the man is indeed Changmin. However, it wasn’t just them two having a meal.
Choreographer Shim Jae Won and other staff members also ate with them. Their dating relationship is just a suspicion raised from a single incident.

It was a drawing of two lovers from a drama.
- “My phone background.”
- “[picture]”
- “My heart fluttered while watching a drama so here’s a croquis.”
