10 K-Pop Records That Are So Impressive That They Will Probably Never Be Broken
While some K-Pop records are getting broken on a fairly regular basis due to the music genre’s increasing popularity worldwide, there are other records so impressive and so far beyond anyone else that they’re unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon! From incredible music chart feats to record views on YouTube, the day that any of these kinds of records are broken will be massive.
Here are 10 such records that we doubt will get surpassed anytime soon, if ever!
1. Girls’ Generation’s record music show rating
This specific performance of “Genie” by Girls’ Generation in 2009 on a helipad broke the record for the highest rating of a music show ever! It reached a whopping 17.2% (around 8.6 million people watching), far surpassing the 2% that was the average for music shows at the time. The girl group was also only 2 years old at the time, making it even more impressive.
2. BTS’s “Spring Day” number of weeks trending on MelOn
Since “Spring Day” was released in February 2017, it hasn’t once left the top 100 on the MelOn music chart. At this time, it has spent 294 weeks (or over 5 and a half years) within the top 100, and though it’s currently ranked at #85, it rises in the chart fairly regularly without any clear indication of why. The song with the second-most weeks spent in the top 100, Paul Kim‘s “Every Day, Every Moment”, is at 236 weeks.
3. BTS’s Map of the Soul: 7 total album sales
Map of the Soul: 7 not only still holds the title for most sales on the first day and first week of release — 2.65 million and 3.38 million respectively — but it is by far the best-selling K-Pop album of all time as well. It’s currently at around 4.91 million sales, and quite possibly might reach the 5 million mark in the future. The second best-selling album is their own Map of the Soul: Persona with 4.57 million sales.
4. IU’s number of #1 songs on Circle Chart
IU can be definitively described as the Circle Chart (formerly Gaon) queen, with by far the most songs that have reached #1 on the chart. She currently has 30 songs that have reached the top of the chart, and the artist in second place, BIGBANG, has 11, which is still impressive but far behind IU’s record!
5. Number of music show awards won by BTS’s “Dynamite”
BTS’s “Dynamite” has by far the most music show wins for any K-Pop song, with an incredible 32 wins on various music shows like Inkigayo, Music Bank, and M Countdown. The song in second place is their own “Boy With Love” with 21 wins!
6. BTS’s number of #1 songs on Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart
Another record that BTS has is the artist with the highest number of songs that have reached #1 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart! The chart is notoriously difficult for K-Pop songs to get on, let alone reach the top 10 or #1. At this time, BTS has had 6 songs reach #1 on the chart, and 10 of their songs have made it to the top 10. No other K-Pop artist has even had a song reach #1 on the chart, and only PSY has reached the top 10!
7. PSY’s “Gangnam Style” music video views
Speaking of PSY, his music video for “Gangnam Style” still holds the record for the most-watched K-Pop music video on YouTube, and is currently at 4.56 billion views. BLACKPINK‘s “DDU-DU DDU-DU” music video is in second with 1.96 billion views, which is incredible, but far behind “Gangnam Style” whose views just keep going up!
8. IU’s number of songs that achieved PAKs
A PAK, or Perfect All-Kill, is “a music chart achievement in South Korea where a song simultaneously reaches number one on the real-time, daily, and weekly components of iChart”, which includes music charts such as MelOn, Genie, Bugs!, and more. IU holds the record for most songs to achieve a PAK, with 21 songs currently. The artist in second place, BIGBANG, has had 6 songs achieve PAKs.
9. BTS’s number of songs on Spotify with over 100 million streams
Not only has BTS become the first K-Pop artist to have 100 songs reach over 100 million streams on Spotify, but they’re also the third artist ever to achieve this after Drake and Bad Bunny! No other K-Pop artist has surpassed even 30 songs with over 100 million streams at this time.
10. BLACKPINK’s “How You Like That” dance practice video views
Finally, BLACKPINK’s dance practice video for “How You Like That” is the first K-Pop dance practice video to surpass one billion views on YouTube, and currently has 1.25 billion views as of the time of this writing! Their own “DDU-DU DDU-DU” dance practice comes in second with 467.7 million views at this time.
