20-Year-Old Man Sent To Prison After Beating And Starving His Own Mother To Death
A young man in his 20s, referred to as Mr. A, has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Busan District Court for the crime of abandoning and causing the death of his own mother. The court announced the decision on November 9, following a trial that shed light on the details of this tragic case.
The incident, which occurred between December 2021 and March last year, involved Mr. A repeatedly assaulting his mother, Ms. B, a woman in her 50s who had been struggling with mental health issues for two decades. Due to her condition, she relied on her family for basic day-to-day support. The family, which originally included Mr. A’s father and older sister, faced changes in March 2020 when the father had to be hospitalized due to health issues, leaving Mr. A as the main caregiver for Ms. B at home.
The court heard that Mr. A’s behavior turned violent when his mother disrupted him, such as eating food he had bought or interfering with his long hours of playing computer games. Reports indicated that Mr. A not only assaulted Ms. B but also denied her basic necessities, including food and medication. This neglect, compounded by violence, led to her deteriorating health and eventual death at home in March last year.
The court’s ruling acknowledged Mr. A’s admission of guilt but pointed out that, despite the challenges of caring for his mother alone, he failed to provide the most basic care and instead inflicted harm that left her unable to move. Additionally, the court noted that Mr. A kept his mother’s body in the room, fearing the consequences of his actions being discovered.
He left her body in the room out of fear that the assaults would be discovered, which shows the severity of his wrongdoing.
