2023 “MAMA Awards” Called Out For Mistreating Girl Groups
On November 28 and 29, the 2023 MAMA Awards took place, honoring a year of achievements for artists.
While this was a happy occasion for groups winning awards, many netizens have expressed their dissatisfaction with MAMA, specifically naming how the awards program has allegedly “fallen off” in recent years.
The Shockingly Negative Reactions From International Fans Towards The 2023 “MAMA Awards”
It seems like another point has been made in favor of the awards show’s decreasing quality, and it involves the types of groups attending and performing.
On an online forum, fans discussing the awards show couldn’t help but point out an apparent difference in how the awards show treated girl groups and boy groups.

One point brought up was the number of girl group performers vs boy group performers. With soloists and the Street Woman Fighter participants included in performance totals, a total of nine stages across both nights had female performers.
Performances that included boy groups totaled sixteen over the two nights.
Not only were the performances by male artists more in quantity, but there was a difference in time from female performers. Of the female performers, only Somi performed more than one song during her set, while several male performers did at least two.
Actual performance time also varied between male and female groups — the second day of performances saw girl groups performing for around five minutes each, while more than one boy group had upwards of seven.
Netizens used these points to express their frustration with the awards show, with many hoping that girl groups will ultimately skip it next year if treated this way.

Ultimately, fans of these girl groups are not asking boy groups to have less time but for all groups to be treated equally.
