On June 8, Jung Yoo Jung was identified as the assailant of a murder committed in Busan two weeks prior. On May 26, Jung approached a woman through a tutoring app by posing as a parent looking for a tutor to teach her child. They arranged a meeting at the victim’s house, and Jung arrived disguised as a student in a school uniform. There, she killed the woman with a weapon she had prepared and carried the body out in a suitcase. When a cab driver found Jung suspicious after seeing her bloodied suitcase at night, he called the police, and she was arrested.

Experts believed that the motive for Jung’s gruesome murder was envy towards the victim, a student at a prestigious university with good social standing, whereas Jung lived an isolated life. They believed that Jung’s solitary lifestyle triggered psychopathy to the point where she could not distinguish what was real and what was not.

According to JTBC News on June 26, the main reason for Jung’s crime was that she had grown up without proper care. She lived apart from her parents since childhood and was raised by her grandfather, which made her feel betrayed and abandoned by her parents. She also didn’t have a good relationship with her grandfather.

Jung reportedly spoke to her father on the phone two days before the crime and foretold the murder she had planned. During the phone call, she reportedly requested her father to apologize for her difficult upbringing and told him that if she caused big harm, he would be the one who would suffer. Jung even told him, “I’m going to do harm and then die.”

It was also revealed that after Jung failed while preparing for her college entrance exam and the civil service exam, she searched “parenticide,” or the murder of one’s parents, online.

Jung is currently imprisoned in a solitary room at the Women’s Detention Center in Busan.
