Audit Attendee Blasted For Taking “Cute” Selfie With NewJeans’ Hanni After Netizens Uncover Horrific Detail About His Company
On October 15, NewJeans’ Hanni appeared at the National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee’s state audit as a witness, where she shared her experiences of idol bullying and workplace harassment.
The hearing quickly garnered attention, with discussions focused on issues within HYBE and its treatment of employees. While Hanni’s testimony sparked online debates, one particular moment has stirred widespread outrage.
During the audit, a participant was seen taking a “cute” selfie with Hanni, who was seated behind him. In a photo that went viral, the participant can be seen smiling as Hanni, also smiling, looks into the camera. The man in the photo was later identified as Jeong In Seop, the President of Hwanha Ocean.
While netizens first thought of it as a cute moment, they soon turned on Jeong. It was soon revealed that Jeong had been summoned to the hearing due to the disturbing record of his company, which has seen four fatal worker accidents this year alone. His actions — considered inappropriate given the gravity of the situation — ignited a storm of criticism online.
During the audit, Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Kim Tae Sun directly confronted Jeong about the selfie. Kim questioned Jeong, asking whether he had indeed taken the photo, to which Jeong confirmed:
Jeong In Seop: “Yes. Hanni was very nervous.”
Kim Tae Sun: “How can you be taking selfies and laughing when people are dying at your company? It’s not that you can’t take selfies ever, but as a representative appearing as a witness, you shouldn’t act like that.”
Jeong In Seop: “I’m sorry.”
Despite Jeong’s apology, the damage had already been done. The incident sparked outrage among netizens, who condemned Jeong’s insensitivity and lack of accountability. Some even said they felt bad Hanni had to take a picture with the man.
- “Ah… I’m speechless. I vaguely assumed he was a representative of some worker attending as a witness for another issue…”
- “So immature, unbelievable.”
- “I’ve been watching the hearings, and there have been too many worker deaths…”
- “Even if you don’t know the details, this is just so bizarre, LOL.”
- “What the hell is this?”
- “Does he have no conscience?”
- “What an idiot… He must think so little of his employees.”
- “Thanks to Hanni, this came to light. What a disgrace. A worker died, and he’s out there taking photos?”
- “I was just laughing along, but seriously? He showed up for something so serious and chose to act like that?”
- “This company has had four fatal accidents this year alone, and yet the president is out here smiling and taking photos. This is a company that should be punished under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act… This is ridiculous. I feel sorry for Hanni, who unknowingly took a photo with someone like him…”
