BABYMONSTER’s Ahyeon Comes Under Fire As Video Surfaces Of Her Using Racial Slur In A Performance
A member of YG Entertainment‘s upcoming girl group, BABYMONSTER, has gotten herself caught up in a controversy even before the group has debuted.
Member Ahyeon, who quickly earned attention for her visuals and talents after she was revealed as a trainee preparing to debut in BABYMONSTER, has had a video surface of her using a racial slur while performing at her school, Hanlim Arts High School.
The 16-year-old is apparently fluent in English as well, which makes her usage of the N-word that much more disappointing and inexcusable to fans.

This is, frustratingly, far from being the first time that a K-Pop idol has been heard using racial slurs in their vocabulary or while performing. Recently, an old video of rapper Lee Young Ji using the N-word during a performance drew attention online, while aespa‘s Giselle came under fire for mouthing along to the same word a couple of years ago.
In Ahyeon’s case, however, the video appears to be taken fairly recently, as she’s still a student at Hanlim Arts High School.
The video quickly went viral online, with netizens expressing their outrage, disappointment, and fatigue over this continued issue among K-Pop artists.
like god damn are they not tired?? cause i know i am https://t.co/pSoU0AJtRt

In addition to the tweets, a Reddit post has been gaining a lot of attention discussing the issue. Many commenters are saying that K-Pop companies need to educate their trainees better in order to prevent this sort of thing from happening.

Some are also mentioning how YG Entertainment artists in particular known for this sort of controversy, due to the type of concepts and “swag” that their idols are supposed to emulate.

Others have argued that this has happened too many instances by idols for it to be a company’s fault, but the responsibility is rather on the idols themselves to know better.

Still others blame the “rap persona” that K-Pop idols seem to try to perform for making them feel like it’s alright to use racial slurs and cultural appropriation in their performances and appearance.

It turns out that using the N-word wasn’t the only “inappropriate” thing that Ahyeon rapped at this school performance, either.

At this time, YG Entertainment and Ahyeon have yet to make a statement about the matter. Given that the video has over two million views, however, that may change in the future, especially since netizens are asking for an apology.
