BOL4’s Ahn Ji Young Confesses She Got Her Unique Voice From “Copying” A Legendary Singer
BOL4‘s Ahn Ji Young is known for her unique and easily recognizable voice. She revealed that she developed her singing voice after being inspired by a legendary singer.
On December 26, Ahn Ji Young appeared as a guest on singer Lee Mu Jin‘s popular talk show, Lee Mujin Service. She sang several songs and chatted with Lee Mu Jin about various topics.
In the video, Lee Mu Jin and Ahn Ji Young sang a quick duo of “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”
Afterward, Lee Mu Jin complimented her unique singing voice and asked how she developed it. Ahn Ji Young revealed that it happened during vocal training in high school.
When I started music in high school, I didn’t listen to Korean songs at all, as per my vocal teacher’s insistence. I couldn’t listen to them, I should say. So I studied the vocal techniques and English pronunciation of foreign singers, and I think I made it into my own a little bit.

She further explained that she would copy singers’ vocal techniques, then change her tone a bit and make it “prettier.”
Lee Mu Jin called her unique voice the “Ahn Ji Young technique” and asked her which artist inspired the “Ahn Ji Young technique” the most.
Without hesitation, Ahn Ji Young replied.
Amy Winehouse! I really like her. In a way, I think I’ve imitated her style the most.

When asked why she likes the English singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse the most, Ahn Ji Young praised the late singer’s uniqueness.
I love her uniqueness. Her unique voice, unique music, and her free-spiritedness. All of theese have been a great inspiration to me. I used to want to get tattoos all over like her, but I ended up only singing her songs.

The singer then performed her rendition of Amy Winehouse’s hit song “Valerie” in her own way.
